In this book/object Isol uses only two colours, yellow and blue, and black lines, to tell us two different stories using the very same images, and she does so just by adopting two different perspectives. When a little boy finds a duck (or is it when a duck finds a little boy?), two worlds meet… which one is more useful to the other?
In the yellow pages it’s the little boy who tells us about his discovery – and all the useful things you can do with a duck – but just as his narration comes to an end we suddenly find ourselves before a new cover, a blue one. And we suddenly get to see the very same deeds from the point of view of the duck, who tells us all the useful things you can do with a little boy… and with no less satisfaction!
The author and illustrator, inspired by the cheap books with few colours she loved to leaf through at her grandparents’ house as a child, designed this book when she still used to draw and make photocopies on coloured paper. In her mind, it was to become a sort of little instruction manual on how to use a duck… or a little boy!
Never has a book format been so coherent with the content and the main idea behind it: this accordion book allows us to read it again and again, shifting from one perspective to the other and never stopping.
