The Prairie by Rachel Ashwell
From flea market to pride of place
Rachel Ashwell on a journey from the legendary flea markets of Round Top, Texas to the beautiful, comfortable, and functional spaces she has created at The Prairie by Rachel Ashwell—a unique bed and breakfast experience in the heart of cowboy country.
Think Marie Antoinette in jeans and a cowboy hat – that is Rachel Ashwell’s prairie style. Rachel Ashwell Couture Prairie takes her signature pastels, ruffles, and whimsical prettiness right to the heart of cowboy country. This is a journey in pictures and words, following Rachel through the fields of a little town called Round Top, home to one of the largest, most eclectic, vibrant antiques and flea markets in the world, and then back home to her latest living artwork where all her inspired finds, her creative imagination, eye for detail, and her commitment to beauty, comfort, and function have finally come together in one location: The Prairie by Rachel Ashwell—an irresistible destination.
This book takes Rachel in a new direction, bringing her eye for cherished patinas and pastel prettiness into the endless landscapes and diverse architectural styles of Texas. Here you will see how her style adapts to metal sheeting and weathered timbers and how it brings new life to elegant period mansions. Ruffles, rusty corrugated tin, chandeliers, floaty pastel fabrics, and concrete floors have never looked better.
Rachel Ashwell is a self-made businesswoman who founded the iconic brand known as Shabby Chic in 1989 when she opened a small shop in Santa Monica, California where she sold “pretty things” without spending much time or distance away from her young children. Her vision and love of vintage style and flea-market finds have hit a chord with her customers who have found her comfortable, relaxed approach to design both reassuring and achievable. She has educated and inspired people through a series of books—Shabby Chic, The Shabby Chic Home, Rachel Ashwell’s Shabby Chic Guide to Treasure Hunting and Decorating, and Shabby Chic: Sumptuous Settings—and through her television series “Rachel Ashwell’s Shabby Chic On Style” (some episodes available on DVD). Rachel Ashwell: Shabby Chic Interiors was published in 2009 by CICO Books to celebrate twenty years of Shabby Chic. This was followed in 2011 by Rachel Ashwell: Shabby Chic Inspirations and Beautiful Spaces. There are now Rachel Ashwell Shabby Chic Couture stores in Los Angeles, New York, Texas, San Francisco, and London. In 2011 Rachel opened “The Prairie by Rachel Ashwell”—a bed and breakfast in Texas.
