FRIDA FRIDA FRIDA FRIDA FRIDA FRIDA

Confined to bed by poliomyelitis for nine months at the age of seven and later victim of a bus accident with terrible consequences, Frida Kahlo went in and out of hospital for all her life and underwent as many as 32 surgical operations. Nonetheless she never lost her enthusiasm, her will to love and have any kind of experience. Her absolutely unique, pitiless and courageous art allowed her to cope with terrible challenges and win. Through painting she expressed pain and depression, but also joy, passion and love. The essential text by Jonah Winter unties the knots intertwining in Frida’s biography and Ana Juan’s imagination meets the art by Frida Kahlo creating vivacious and colourful images. There are many references to the self-portraits painted by the Mexican artist but here their harshness is softened by the prevailing soft lines and by a fairy-tale setting peopled by a court of funny animals and incarnations of the sun and the moon. Represented first as a child and then as an adult, Frida is portrayed in statuesque poses and wearing gaudy clothes that – as in her paintings – capture the observer’s attention. A key detail of the image we all know, the eyebrows soldering between the eyes that are often closed functions like the third eye opened on herself. Sometimes they take the form of a bird, thus recalling the flight of imagination, the freedom that has always distinguished the life and art of Frida Kahlo.
A moving and sweet tribute to one of the most original and influential artists of the Twentieth century and an encouragement for everybody to overcome the complications of life through creativity.
