What’s wrong in Tinseltown?
The dark side of Los Angeles, 1920–1960
In the years following World War I, Los Angeles was a city transforming itself from a backwater town to a gleaming metropolis of the future. But along the way, a tarnished patina began to coat its ever-more glamorous façade. As thousands flocked to the city with their dreams and desires, so too came get-rich-quick schemes, phony religions, organized crime, and rife corruption.
A visual history like no other, this book brings together images from archives, museums, newspaper photo morgues, private collections, and the author’s own extensive image library to reveal the true grit, grime, and sheer horror stories of Los Angeles of the 1920s to 1950s. Through the back alleys, gin joints, tattoo parlors, gambling dens, nightclubs, and the most brutal crime scenes, we uncover a city crawling with murder and mayhem. We survey the headline Black Dahlia case and the pervasive corruption of unscrupulous cops and mayors.
Through bullet holes, underground clubs, and bodies beneath bleak bridges, the stories reveal as much about the flip side of the Southland as they do the real-world inspiration for the journalists, pulp fiction scribes, and Filmland scriptwriters who together created Noir.
