“My kingdom for a horse!” If king Richard III was willing to make this exchange, he must have had his good reasons. Indeed, since the very beginning of civilisation, these animals have done a great service to humankind: they worked in the fields and allowed men to travel long distances in a short time, transporting people and goods, and accompanying soldiers on the battlefield. Afterwards, with the advent of new technologies, horses were no longer employed in wars and transportation, and so riding ceased to be a necessity and became more of a leisure activity. This marked the rise of horse-riding – which became known as “the sport of kings” – and horse-racing, determining the great success of Arabian thoroughbreds, imported in Western countries. After all, as the Australian poet Pam Brown puts it, “Horses lend us the wings we lack”.
Over the centuries, the role of horses has changed a lot, yet they’ve never ceased to charm humans and inspire artists, who keep celebrating the nobility, elegance, and loyalty of these animals.
This book collects some of the most beautiful representations of horses in art, ranging from George Stubbs to Pablo Picasso, from Arthur Rackham to Toulouse-Lautrec, Marc Chagall, Lucien Freud, René Magritte and many others. These gorgeous illustrations are accompanied by quotes and proverbs about horses, as well as interesting anecdotes on their authors and especially on their relationship with these wonderful, affectionate, inseparable friends of mankind.
